Broken Lives Illustrated
This thought-provoking film highlights the lives of twelve homeless people living in Florida. Their stories all begin differently. None of them expected to become homeless, but life happened.
For one man it was after breaking up with his girlfriend and losing his job. Ironically, he had chosen her over a transfer and still ended up empty handed just two weeks after making that decision. Having been brought up with the idea that if you wanted work you would be able to find it, it was shocking for him to discover that there are a variety of reasons why it’s not that easy to find a job.
Another man admits that he was brought up well, but after his parents divorced he started hanging out with the wrong crowd and ended up in a motorcycle gang. Eventually he had a terrible accident that left him unable to work much. Then his relationship went sour and his girlfriend had him evicted. He has been on the streets ever since, although he tries to do better. He has been robbed and beat up a number of times and his friend was murdered.
One man remembers the physical, sexual, and emotional abuse he had to endure at the age of 9 at a reformatory school. He was placed there because his parents were unable to handle him. Now at the age of 60 he admits that he can’t get the abuse out of his mind and because of this he has no confidence to do anything or strive for anything. He says that at this point in his life he is “only existing” without a purpose.
A young woman and her one-year-old baby are homeless because her husband lost his job. She was sexually abused from age 3 to 17 and admits that the abuse might have been one of the factors that led her to becoming a drug addict. She has four other children that were taken from her.
Another man says he has been arrested 39 times. He spends all his money on drugs and alcohol.
Some of the men and women in this film have simply checked out of life, but some of them still have dreams of doing better. Who knows what the future holds for them? Who knows what they will be able to do with the little they have? Watch this interesting documentary now.
