Eminem: Behind the Lyrics
Marshall Bruce Mathers III, commonly known as Eminem, was born in 1972 in Missouri, USA. His childhood was not an easy one; the environment was best described as grim. His family was severely impoverished with a long history of dysfunction and abuse.
Life was very volatile and there were many incidents of moving around and abandonment—
an issue that affected the young Marshall for the rest of his life. There was no stability in his formative years and no anchor that could give him a strong sense of self. He changed schools every few months and this gave him a feeling of always having to start over. These disadvantages led him to believe that he would never quite fit in with the rest of his peers.
Eventually his mother settled down in Detroit, but the city was plagued with racial tension. This made it particularly difficult for him to be one of the few White kids in a predominantly Black school. The fact that he did not have a father figure made it even harder for him to cope because his peers rejected him and bullied him viciously. He became a lonely child who was medicated for hyperactivity.
At the age of eleven, Marshall was introduced to hiphop by an uncle who was his same age. This changed his life forever. By the age of 14 he was already writing lyrics as a way of making sense of the craziness going on all around him.
At the age of 15, Kimberly Scott moved in to live with them. His mother had always wanted a daughter so she jumped at the opportunity to foster the young girl. Little did she know that within a year Marshall and Kimberly would be involved in a highly volatile sexual relationship.
Eventually Marshall dropped out of college and became a fast food chef living on minimum wage while the constant fights continued at home.
After losing his beloved uncle, a grief stricken Marshall buried himself in his music for comfort. He hooked up with a buddy and started getting into the local hiphop scene. At this point he became officially known as Eminem.
Having sold over 100 million albums worldwide, he is now regarded as one of the best selling artists in the world and has been previously ranked as the best selling artist of the 2000s. Watch this film now.
