Freddy Mercury is regarded as one of the greatest singers and songwriters of the 20th Century. His talent and natural charisma propelled Queen to superstardom and their songs remain popular twenty years after his death.

Back in the seventies, three academics and an art student redefined popular rock forever. Their constant need to be different paid off and by the late 80s they were on top of the world, creating some of the most unforgettable songs ever.

One of their greatest secrets was that they were not the traditional English Rock and Roll band. These were highly educated men who were extremely different from each other, but the one thing they had in common was that they loved music and they had a gift for writing lyrics that people would feel involved with.

Freddy Mercury was born as Farouk Balsara in Zanzibar. At a young age he was sent to India to attend a British boarding school for boys. That’s where he learned to play the piano. Eventually he reinvented himself and took on a completely different name that fit the persona he was trying to portray. And it worked.

Queen repeatedly broke records including the largest paying audience for a band anywhere in the world. They became the band to watch live and none of their fans were ever disappointed. Each tour added a new dimension of outrageousness because Freddy was the ultimate showman. He controlled the crowd from the moment he stepped on stage until he was done. People loved him and he loved them right back.

Despite their busy schedule, the band continued to record persistently, creating new sounds to impress their fans.

In the early 80s they produced an album that was highly unpopular and hinted at the fact that the band members were drifting apart. So they decided to take some time off to pursue their own solo careers. In 1985 they came back together to perform at Live Aid and the domination of the crowd was so amazing that they stole the show. The band understood that they were better together.

Then Freddy died and his departure robbed the band of their beloved friend and lead singer.

This film tells the story of how four musicians broke all the rules and pushed musical boundaries to the limit. Mocked by critics but adored by fans. Watch it now.
