REFUGE
Human Stories From The Refugee Crisis
The world is changing quickly and the things that some take for granted are impossible dreams for others. Many men, women, and children have had to leave the comforts of their home and the familiarity of their place of birth to set out on a quest for survival. They leave most of their loved ones behind and run holding on only to a few possessions and the safety of their hope. The refugee crisis that is occurring simultaneously in many parts of the world is astounding. The estimate is that over 60 million people have been displaced since 2015. Many believe this is the largest refugee crisis since World War II.

In January 2016, a small team of filmmakers headed to Greece to interview the main protagonists in this crisis. For many of them, Greece is a place of hope for a new beginning and a stepping-stone into countries like Germany.
One woman makes it clear that she didn’t run away, it’s just that Syria had become uninhabitable even for animals. There was no running water, no electricity, and no safety, not even when you locked yourself up. Another man states that the things he went through in prison are beyond what the human mind can comprehend. He remembers asking a prison guard to kill him and put an end to his miserable existence.
In Syria, it didn’t matter whether you were with ISIS or with the Regime you still weren’t safe. Many were forced to kill family members to show allegiance and even then they were at the mercy of missiles.
It’s hard to believe that the country they love no longer exists because it has been reduced to a pile of rubbles and dust.
Most of the refugees travel by boat. Sometimes these small vessels are too frail even for fishing, let alone to carry 60 passengers. Very often, the boats sink or capsize in the open sea, pushing many of its passengers to an early death. Other times they make it to shore only to become ill and die due to the roughness of the journey. Ironically a few lose their lives just as they reach the shores. It’s an unbearable and heartbreaking sight for all who survive.
Through it all, let us never forget that these are humans just like us, and like us they deserve to live a decent life. Watch this now.
My heart is aching for the refugees.
