The Wizard Oz
It was Roald Dahl who said “those who do not believe in magic will never find it.” Oberon Zell-Ravenheart seems to have taken those words to heart. He is known as Oz and he is a self-proclaimed wizard.
Oz’s life has always been immersed in magic. He is as comfortable there as a fish is in water. As a child, his storybooks were all children versions of Greek mythology. He remembers sneaking out naked on full moon nights and going out into the yard. It was his own little monthly ritual.
At a young age it was discovered that he was a prodigy. So he was dragged off to the Psychology Department of a local university, where he was studied and tested. All his results were off the charts and his parents wondered what to do with him.
As he got older, Oz went deeper into his studies about magic, mythology, and witchcraft. This led him to start experimenting and trying out some of what he was learning.
In 1961, he read a book called Stranger in a Strange World that was written by Robert A. Heinlein. The book introduced the idea of a fictitious Church of all Worlds that embraced every tradition and belief without being exclusive.
And so Oz set out to start his own organization. When asked which belief system he and his devotees endorsed, he decided that they were pagans. Ironically, this made his ideology spread like wildfire until thousands of men and women began to follow his teachings.
Oz managed to create a life for himself that was nothing short of a fairy tale. He even raised unicorns on his farm for a few years. In this film he candidly shares anecdotes about the magical life he shared with the love of is life – his wife Morning Glory.
Oz recognizes that he is old now, but not feeble. He has had to deal with the fact that he won’t live forever. After losing his wife, his limitations became clear to him because in magic there are three things you can’t do: you can’t raise the dead, you can’t change the past, and you can’t force love. But as the saying goes, “that which is remembered, lives.” That’s why Oz is doing all he can to make sure his teachings live on long after he’s gone. Watch this thought-provoking film now.
