Snowboarding is a recreational activity that involves, but isn’t limited to, descending a snow-covered slope while standing on a board that is attached to the feet. This board is usually the width of one’s foot longways. It is designed to give the ability to glide on snow. Snowboards are different from monoskis because of the stance of the user. In snowboarding the user stands with feet transverse to the length of the board.

The people involved in the sport are referred to as snowboarders, and it appeals mostly to a crowd with ages ranging between 12 and 44.

Commercial snowboards normally need additional equipment such as bindings and special boots, which help secure the snowboarder’s feet because he or she rides in an upright position. These types of boards are commonly used for leisure but also for competitive purposes.

It’s obvious that the development of snowboarding was inspired by other sports such as skateboarding, sledding, skiing, and surfing. It was developed in the United States in the 1960s and it became a Winter Olympic Sport in 1998. Skateboarding was first featured in the Winter Paralympics in 2014.

In the United States its popularity peaked in 2007. However some experts believe that the sport has been in a decline since then. There are many speculations, but the general agreement is that it might have to do with the fact that snowboarders are aging and leaving the slopes to start families. Also, less parents are placing their children in snowboarding classes because they have started to see it as a dangerous extreme sport. Add to that the fact that there have been a few bad winters and some famous sports brands have pulled out their sponsorship.

From the streets of Helsinki, Finland all the way to the Whistler, British Columbia backcountry, this film captures the sheer excitement, beauty, and grace of snowboarding. Watch in awe as Danimals, Johnny Brady, Ian Hart, Teo Konttinen, and Zebbe Landmark expertly glide in total defiance of gravity.

Cameo appearances include legends such as Jake Oe, Travis Rice, Bryan Fox, Will Lavigne, Ulrik Badertscher, and Kim Rune Hansen. Watch this film now.
