The best music transcends your playlist and moves into a place in your life where it becomes your companion. This film by Eastwood Allen chronicles the evolution of John Mayer: singer/songwriter, guitar player, touring musician, and recording artist. John Mayer has become one of the most influential solo artists of his generation.

He was born in Bridgeport Connecticut in 1977 and grew up listening to what he regards as incredible, well-performed, well-composed music. As a small child he became fascinated with the guitar and at the age of 13, began taking lessons with Al Ferrante. John Mayer enjoyed listening to Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix as a teenager.

At the age of 17, John and some friends formed a band they named ‘Another Roadside Attraction’ and they begin playing at local clubs. Around the same time, he started to write songs, but realized he didn’t know anybody who could sing them. So John started to sing and developed his own style when he was unable to sound like the persons he was trying to imitate.

John Mayer claims that as soon as he took up a guitar he just knew that he’d be playing it full time for the rest of his life.

At 19, he went to Berklee College of Music where he came in contact with all kinds of people who also had different kids of music playing in their minds all the time. By Christmas break he realized that he didn’t want any more instructions, but wanted to simply play his guitar and make music.

In September 1999, John presented his first self-released EP titled ‘Inside Wants Out’. A few months later in March 2000, Mayer caught the attention of Aware Records. That is how ‘Room for Squares’ was born— the first of many successful endeavors.

Mayer claims that being able to play with so many different artists in so many different genres has allowed him to see how music works. One of the things he loves most about his career is the passport to shuffle between the different idioms of music and ask himself if there’s anything there that he can grab on to with his own musicality

The story in this film is told entirely from John’s perspective, and it features rare demos, interviews, and live performances. Become acquainted with the creative process of much-admired, Grammy Award winning, guitarist and singer-songwriter John Mayer. Watch this now.
