The Man Who Hunts Spy Satellites

French engineer Thierry Legault believes that people have a right to know that there are spy satellites (among others) above our heads. On a clear night these satellites can be easily spotted. They’re visible and the details can be identified with a telescope.

Astrophotography is not only Legault’s hobby, it’s also his passion. A passion he developed at a very early age. Legault remembers fondly his first telescope which he received as a gift from his parents. He enjoys passing on this passion to others and helping them practice the same kind of photography he does and to hopefully do it better.

Thierry Legault cruises various websites where he can get lists of satellites that are visible every evening. Then he goes out with his equipment and “hunts” for them. Sometimes this hobby involves risks. But he’s willing to take them because it makes it all worthwhile.

Weather can sometimes stand in the way of his observations. A cloudly Parisian sky can easily hide his target. But Legault doesn’t allow frustration to get the best of him because he’s on a mission.

It’s a story of mutual surveillance, adept tracking and ultimately one man’s quest to do “things that nobody has done before.”
