It was only until 1997 that the former British colony of Hong Kong was handed back to the People’s Republic of China. Even so, Hong Kong was to retain its established way of life and a high degree of autonomy until 2047. This became known as “one country, two systems.”

But in 2019 an extradition bill proposed the possibility of prosecuting Hong Kong citizens under Chinese law. Immediately there were large protests demanding the withdrawal of the bill. However, the police met protesters with extremely violent dispersal tactics.

This attitude sparked a broader movement that had five specific demands, which included the full withdrawal of the extradition bill and amnesty for arrested protesters. The bill was withdrawn, but the other four demands were not met, so the protests continued.

One of the most violent clashes of the protests became known as The Siege of Poly-U. This happened when students occupied vital roads and fortified major universities in order to get the police to back down.

As a result, there was a lot of destruction and ruin that lasted for months, but the cry remained the same: May Freedom Reign for Hong Kong! Watch this riveting documentary now.
